The inflammatory response, the reaction of the body to defend

Matrix Metalloproteinases(MMPs) play a key role in collagen degradation. Currently there are over 25 types of MMPs. MMPs have been shown to inhibit the proliferation of epidermal skin cells and fibroblasts (the cells that produce collagen). They have been shown to break down extracellular collagen and inhibit the formation of new collagen. Ultraviolet radiation and environmental stress enhances the destructive role of MMPs.

Oxygen free radicals also lead to skin aging. Oxygen free radicals destroy the cellular biomembranes of skin and create lipid peroxides that damage cellular lipid barriers and accelerate skin aging.

The inflammatory response also leads to an accumulation of white blood cells (leukocytes) that release elastases, which destroy collagen and elastin.
